Volunteer Opportunities:

BOOKSALE HELPER

This event assists the Friends of the Library with various duties during a sale. Shifts include unpacking and setting up for the sale as well as clean up and packing at the end of the sale. Two hour shifts for assisting the Friends with greeting customers, arranging material as customers make selections and helping the cashier count materials for each purchase. Sales are typically scheduled four times a year at one of Dayton Metro Library Branch Community Rooms.

ESL FACILITATOR VOLUNTEER

This volunteer opportunity is responsible for facilitating learning trough a multi-learning station curriculum model developed for the Library’s ESL Program for Newest Americans. Facilitators provide an opportunity to practice English in a student led, non-judgmental, safe and fun atmosphere. Help build adult newcomers’ skills in spoken English and create confidence in speaking – in an informal, respectful and inviting space using DML approved lesson plans. FOOD PANTRY PROGRAM HELPER

This volunteer opportunity is responsible for providing assistance to Library staff in conducting the Food Pantry Program in conjunction with Montgomery County Foo Pantries. Opportunity Description

GENERAL LIBRARY HELPER

Volunteers are needed to help with an assortment of daily tasks, including light cleaning, straightening, gardening, or other various activities depending upon the location need. Opportunity Description

HOME LIBRARY SERVICES DELIVERY HELPER

This volunteer opportunity allows you to assist the Outreach Services Department in delivery library materials to those who are unable to come to a library location. Volunteers must be attentive to detail, and enjoy being out in the community. In addition, Volunteers must be prepared to work in seasonal elements and be able to lift up to 20lbs. HOMEWORK HELPER

Help a student to understand their homework assignments, develop literacy skills, and more. Volunteers will assist students for a designated amount of time. The volunteer will assist students of all K- 12 on various subject matters on a drop in basis. A semester commitment is desired for this volunteer opportunity. As a volunteer homework helper you will have the satisfaction of inspiring students to achieve their lifelong goals. Opportunity Description

LIBRARY AMBASSADOR

This volunteer opportunity is responsible for assisting with the promotion of specific adult, children’s, tween, and teen programming or events for the Library on social media platforms or other social circles like neighbors, businesses, church groups, or other local civic organizations. Opportunity Description

LIBRARY MASCOT

As an official Dayton Metro Library Mascot, you will be a lovable extension of our Library family programs, special appearances, and other community events. While it takes responsibility, energy, and effort, it is also a ton of fun! The Library Mascot will be required to appear at Special Events. A Volunteer must meet the physical requirements/limitations of the Mascot costume by being between 5’2”-5’8” tall and weigh up to 185 pounds. In addition the Volunteer will be trained in the Mascot’s “signature moves”. Training will be provided and is required for this opportunity.  Opportunity Description

NEW FACILITIES GREETER

Welcome and provide direction to patrons as they enter locations. This volunteer position will be the first face a patron encounters when they come to the library. A two hour minimum shift commitment is required. Opportunity Description

PROGRAM HELPER

Help with an adult, children’s, teen, and tween program. This includes set-up, crafts, and cleanup. Must enjoy working with others! A two to three hour a week commitment is required. Most programming is conducted during regular operating hours. Opportunity Description

READING BUDDIES

This volunteer opportunity allows you to serve as a mentor and Reading Buddy to a child in preschool through 3rd grade. The opportunity entails allowing a child to practice reading with a one-on-one volunteer. At the end of each reading segment or session you will ask the child to discuss and review what he or she has just read. This opportunity helps students with reading and comprehension skills. SPECIAL EVENT HELPER

Volunteer assistance is needed for Special/Episodic Events throughout the year. This can require set-up, maintaining a booth, and clean-up. Events may range from Party in the Park, Staff Day, and other festivals. Your name is added to a list of volunteers willing to be called a week or two in advance of each event. TEEN ADVISORY BOARD MEMEBER

This volunteer opportunity makes suggestions on tween and teen programming and other future projects. The Teen Advisory Board meets monthly or quarterly at various locations. Occasional projects are assigned in assisting with the creation of programs or surveys. Opportunity Description
