Getting Ready to Read

Children who have phonological awareness can identify and make oral rhymes, can clap the syllables in words, and identify words with the same initial sound like “tall” and “tot”.  Research has shown that a sensitivity for rhyme helps with later reading development.  Adults can help children learn phonological awareness doing short and fun activities such as taking turns coming up with words that rhyme.  When reading books with rhyming words, focus your child’s attention on the rhymes.
