Besides the financial support of John Patterson, the Daughters of the American Revolution raised money to restore the Old Cabin; finally in 1886 it was opened as a Public Museum with all the relics donated by Daytonians. The rocking chair by the fireplace was owned by George Newcom.

After the celebrations of the Centennial, the Centennial Committee under the guidance of the James O. Arnold, on September 30th, 1896, decided to organize the Dayton Historical Society.
