In 1893 a museum opened on the upper floor of the Dayton Public Library. Beginning as an aggregation of hobbies and traveler's curios, it grew into a natural history museum with small collections on local history, Native Americans, foreign coins and Egyptian artifacts. It later was housed in several locations before becoming an autonomous institution now located on Deweese Parkway in Dayton.
