Here's a dozen books that will get you beyond the daily grind, but still enrich your understanding of social issues and contribute to your nonprofit management "toolbox." Do you have a favorite to suggest? Please share!

	The memoir of a successful man who grew up in innercity Baltimore. He was shocked to learn about a man with the same name, from the same neighborhood, serving life in prison. Why did their lives, so similar at first, have such different outcomes?
	This is the bestselling story of an ordinary but extraordinary man determined to build a school in Afghanistan. The chapter on fundraising is hilarious. You might be surprised where he found his first major donor.

	Historian Howard Zinn passed away earlier this year. His influential book shows American history from the perspective of people struggling for justice. First released in 1980 with a print-run of only 4,000, it remains one of the Dayton Metro Library's most frequently borrowed books. There is also an illustrated version.
	This bestseller is bringing the global struggle for women's rights to the forefront. In a review, Standford Social Innovation Review points out that much remains to be done here at home.
	Geoffrey Canada says: If you saw a child drowning, you would do something. But that's exactly what's happening to American children in our inner cities everyday. This is the story of how the Harlem Children's Zone works to save children's lives, skillfully told by an editor for the New York Times Magazine. HCZ has advice for nonprofits here.
	This is a book for managers. For greater productivity in all but the most mundane jobs, the most effective incentive is not money - in fact, money can be counterproductive. The author sums up the evidence in this video.
	This book picks up where the author's bestseller Groundswell left off: It shows how leaders can put social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) into action.
	There's a newer book by Dan & Chip Heath called Switch on making change happen. It's good too, but the ideas I found in Made to Stick three years ago have really stuck with me.
	Every business leader has read it. Shouldn't you? But wait - be sure you also get the tiny companion book for nonprofits that explains why "business thinking is not the answer."
	Seth Godin always finds his way onto book lists. I took a few minutes to scan Linchpin and it's clear why. It's hard to put down. In essence, the message seems to be: Quit being complacent. Take risks and take charge of your career.
	Richard Florida (of "Creative Class" fame) asks: What will the U.S. look like after all this economic change shakes out? What about Dayton? What can we do to revitalize "rust belt" cities?
	Following the model of the business classic In Search of Excellence, this book profiles the nation's leading nonprofits in search of some common denominators.
	A fun book of business advice for those of us with short attention spans. Rule #52: Stay Alert! There are teachers everywhere.
