About the Book: Author Mark Bernstein at the Dayton Metro Library

On Saturday, March 17, Vick Mickunas hosts a special WYSO Book Nook Live event at the Dayton Metro Library. Mickunas will interview author Mark Bernstein, whose book Grand Eccentrics: Turning the Century: Dayton and the Inventing of America was recently re-released. Their discussion begins at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library Eichelberger Forum, 215 E. Third Street, and is free and open to the public.

Grand Eccentrics is a biography of a six extraordinary individuals - Orville and Wilbur Wright, Charles Kettering, John H. Patterson, Arthur Morgan, and James Cox – whose lives intersected in early 20th century Dayton. Bernstein and Mickunas will talk about how the collaborative spirit of these Daytonians led to an age of industry, which still shapes our lives today. Books will be available for purchase and autographing at the program.

“In Grand Eccentrics, Mark Bernstein pays homage to some of the enduring creative thinkers who once called Dayton home,” said Mickunas. “I think those fellows would be delighted to know that a century later we will be celebrating their feats in the magnificent new Main Library.”

Bernstein is a writer with particular interests in American biography as well as social and technological history. Born in Chicago, he lived for 30 years near Dayton before relocating to Maryland in 2004.

“I interviewed Mark when his book was originally published,” said Mickunas. “This will be the first time I have conducted interviews for the same book during two different centuries! I am excited about recording a radio show in front of a live audience.”

Book Nook has been a mainstay on WYSO 91.3 FM since 1994. Mickunas has produced more than 1,500 interviews with writers, musicians, poets, politicians and celebrities. He’s also book reviewer for the Dayton Daily News and the Springfield News Sun. Book Nook is supported by the Dayton Metro Library, along with Greene County Public Library, Washington-Centerville Public Library, Clark County Public Library, and Wright Memorial Public Library.
