"Voices of the Immigrant Experience" Hosted by Dayton Metro Library

A panel of immigrants and refugees will share their personal stories at the Dayton Metro Library with “Voices of the Immigrant Experience,” Saturday, September 23, at 1:00 p.m. The program takes place in the Main Library Bassani Theater Off Third, 215 E. Third Street, and is free and open to the public.

Welcome Dayton’s “Voices of the Immigrant Experience” brings together diverse community members whose lives may not typically intersect. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists in order to build deeper understanding.

“Storytelling can build bridges between cultures,” said Sarah Whalen, Information Services Librarian. “With these programs, we want to create a dialogue and build connections for a stronger community.”

Two other Library programs in October will build on these connections:

Welcoming New Americans
Welcome Dayton, Catholic Social Services, Dayton City Commission, and new citizens themselves.
Tuesday, October 24 | 5:30 - 7:30 PM | Main Library Eichelberger Forum

Town Hall on Racism & Islamophobia
A partnership with the Dayton Human Relations Council and Dr. Marium Husain, MD, MPH, OSU Wexner Medical Center.
Thursday, October 26 | 6 - 8 PM | Main Library Eichelberger Forum

Dayton Metro Library offers services and resources that promote immigrant integration into the greater Dayton region.

“Our collection includes materials for English language learners and materials to help prepare for Citizenship classes and clinics, while our foreign language collection lets newcomers enjoy materials in their native language,” said Whalen, who oversees the collection.

Mango Languages, available free of charge at offers self-paced English language lessons as well as lessons in 71 other languages. Volunteer-led Talk Tables at the Main Library and several Branch Libraries provide safe, comfortable places for individuals to practice English conversation skills and learn about helpful resources. A monthly newsletter, Tutor Times, keeps English language tutors abreast of Library services and new materials.
