New Main Library: What's Happening this Week

The New Main Library in downtown Dayton is in the final weeks of preparation before the Grand Opening & Community Celebration on Saturday, August 5, 12:00-5:00 p.m.

So what is happening this week?

laptoplendingIt’s Technology Week, as hundreds of computers for public use are being installed. The new Main Library will have more than 130 computers available for public use – more than twice the number available at the old Main Library. Public computer areas will be conveniently located on both the first and second floor of the building.

Automated Materials Handling Equipment is also being installed. With AMH equipment, patrons can return items day or night in the Main Library Lobby and they will be discharged, sorted and sent on to their next destination, automatically.

Other new technology offers convenient public service. Holds Lockers located in the 24-hour accessible Lobby let patrons pick up their reserved materials at their convenience. Two Laptop Dispensers will make borrowing a laptop easy.

“The Laptop Dispensers are like vending machines,” said Josh Ashworth, IT Services Director. “With a swipe of your Library card, you can borrow a laptop to use anywhere in the building. You could take it into the Quiet Reading Room for example, or sit by the fireplace in the Parkside Lounge.”
