Celebrating National Summer Learning Day

at Your Dayton Metro Library

Thursday, July 13, 2017

On July 13, Dayton Metro Library is celebrating National Summer Learning Day with activities at many Branch Libraries.

Organized by the National Summer Learning Association, National Summer Learning Day is celebrated in communities across the country.

Dayton Metro Library's participation in Summer Learning Day is just one of the many ways it supports the efforts of local schools and Learn to Earn Dayton to combat "summer slide." Research shows that children lose academic ground over the summer if they aren't reading and participating in learning experiences.

"All children, but especially low-income children, too often fall behind over the summer," said Ritika Kurup, program manager for Learn to Earn Dayton. "Experts say that by 5th grade, the loss of learning that occurs over summer can put low-income children two to three years behind their peers. Dayton Metro Library is helping our kids be stronger students and to succeed."
/2 to 3 years behind their peer
Matthew Boulay, CEO of the National Summer Learning Association, points out, “On average, taxpayers invest $10,000 to $12,000 per child during the school year -- then we walk away for two to three months of the summer. We essentially let 20 percent of students’ academic growth be lost over the summer.”

Dayton Metro Library joins national and local efforts to promote summer learning and provide safe, healthy spaces for young people:

  • The Library’s annual SUMMER CHALLENGE encourages teens, school ages and young children to keep learning and enjoying books all summer.
  • Free lunch and snacks for ages 18 and younger are provided at several Branch Libraries during the summer.
  • Carefully planned, free activities at all Library locations encourage kids from toddlers to teens to learn, experiment, explore and aspire. A schedule of free Library activities taking place on Thursday, July 13 is attached.

The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) is the only national nonprofit exclusively focused on closing the achievement gap by increasing access to high-quality summer learning opportunities. For more information, visit www.summerlearning.org
