Skype with Author M-E Girard

AT THE WEST CARROLLTON BRANCH LIBRARY

M-E Girard is the author of Girl Mans Up, the March selection of the Dayton Metro Library’s Proud Reads Book Club for teens. Girard joins the group via Skype on Friday, March 24, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the West Carrollton Branch Library, 300 E. Central Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.

Proud Reads is a book club for teens in grades 9 - 12 who want to read and talk about LGBTQ books. The Skype event with M-E Girard is open to all ages.

Girard lives near Toronto where she works as a pediatric nurse in addition to writing. A 2013 and 2015 Lambda Literary Fellow, Girl Mans Up is her debut novel.

From the author’s website (www.megirard.com):

Girl Mans Up is about a queer teen named Pen who realizes the only way she'll get people off her back is by standing up for herself – even if that means her relationships with her friends and her family get messed up in the process. It's also about a gender-nonconforming teen who struggles to own her identity as a girl when she looks and acts like a boy and everyone around her expects her to be one or the other.

Girl Mans Up has won multiple awards including the William C. Morris Award Finalist: Best Young Adult Debut of the Year and Kirkus Reviews Best Teen Books of 2016 with Unforgettable Protagonists. Booklist says “this is a fantastic addition to a steadily growing collection of strong YA narratives for queer youth.”

Three copies of the book will be given away to participants at the event. For more information, call the Library at 937.463.BOOK.
