Get Outside Book Club Connects Children with Nature and Literature

getoutsideTo a young child, the world is an amazing place to be explored. The Get Outside Book Club, which runs from September 1 through October 31, encourages preschoolers’ natural curiosity by pairing storytimes with outdoor activities. A partnership between the Dayton Metro Library and Five Rivers MetroParks, the Get Outside Book Club is geared toward preschoolers with their parents or caregivers. Siblings are welcome.

“Watching children discover the world around them is a beautiful sight. Their curiosity and sense of wonder should be encouraged,” said Dorri Hegyi, Children’s Services Librarian at the Miamisburg Branch Library and coordinator of the Get Outside Book Club. “Using literature as a starting point is a great way to introduce a new topic, so children can build their knowledge and feel more comfortable about new experiences.”

Families can register September 1 - October 31 at their nearest Dayton Metro Library location and receive a folder to keep track of their activities. Once they’ve read six books on any nature-related topic and completed six outdoor activities, their child earns a packet of seeds to plant and a copy of the book Tiny Seed by Eric Carle.

For more information, visit any Dayton Metro Library location, go visit the Get Ouside Book Club site or call (937) 463-BOOK.
