Time Capsule Installed in New Brookville Branch Library

The new Brookville Branch Library, currently under construction on Blue Pride Drive near Brookville High School, is expected to open in late August. Amid all the new furniture, books and technology, a hidden box will preserve a bit of the past.

On Friday, May 13, Brookville Branch Manager Elaine Lindstrom, along with staff members Cindy Carpenter, Judi Ernst and Amanda Kerstiens, placed a time capsule behind drywall at the new construction and it was promptly sealed up for the future. The capsule is set to be opened in 2086 - 150 years after Brookville became the first county branch in the Dayton public library system.

“Our construction project is called Libraries for a Smarter Future and our new building will provide state-of-the-art service” said Lindstrom, “but we also want to remember where we came from. Our time capsule helps us do that.”

Library staff, organizations and individuals in the community contributed items to the time capsule. There’s a Brookville Community Theater brochure listing the 2016 performances. There’s a menu from K’s Restaurant, longtime neighbor of the Library at its Rona Parkway Drive location. There’s a 1985 invitation to the grand opening of that Library. There are photographs, written comments from patrons and staff, even a cell phone.

“A cell phone will probably be an awfully old-fashioned item by 2086,” said Lindstrom, who discovered some interesting facts as she helped compile the time capsule.

“There have been only three ‘head librarians’ at the Brookville Library since 1956 – 60 years! Before 1956, the Library was run by the Bookmobile staff,” she said.

A plaque will mark the location of the Brookville Branch Library time capsule. For updates on the Brookville Library construction and other Dayton Metro Library news and events, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org.
