Three Branch Libraries Merge:...

Dayton View, Ft. McKinley and Northtown-Shiloh Close, Become New Northwest Branch Library

The staff and patrons of the Dayton View, Ft. McKinley and Northtown-Shiloh Branch Libraries will soon join together under one brand new roof. The Northwest Branch of the Dayton Metro Library, centrally located among them, will replace these three small branches.

  • Northtown-Shiloh Branch, located at 35 Bennington Drive, will close permanently at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29.
  • Dayton View Branch, 1515 Salem Avenue, will close at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 30.
  • Ft. McKinley Branch, 3735 Salem Avenue, will offer public computer use only (no other library services) beginning on April 4, and will permanently close at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.

“The new Northwest Branch Library will more than replace the aging and inefficient facilities housing these three small branches,” said Tim Kambitsch, Executive Director. “It will provide improved and expanded services. This will be the largest Branch in our system, and it’s the first brand new facility to open in our Libraries for a Smarter Future project.” Libraries for a Smarter Future is the Dayton Metro Library’s system-wide facilities upgrade, made possible by voter support of a bond issue in 2012.

The Northwest Branch Library, at 2410 Philadelphia Drive, is served by several RTA bus routes and offers ample, lit parking. It will open to the public on April 23, 2016. At approximately 30,000 square feet, it features:

  • expanded public spaces
  • dedicated areas for adults, children and teens
  • dual-sided fireplace
  • more computers
  • flexible meeting and community rooms
  • audiovisual editing suite
  • quiet Reading Room
  • a café operated by Third Perk Express
  • original art installations
