The Big Read Looks at AUTISM

This year’s Big Read book, The Rosie Project, is a lighthearted novel with serious themes, including connection, acceptance and autism spectrum disorder. A glowing review from Booklist says, "The Rosie Project is certain to entertain even as readers delve into deep themes. For a book about a logic-based quest for love, it has a lot of heart.”

The Dayton Metro Library explores one of more complex themes of the novel with several free programs about Autism Spectrum Disorder. From strategies for people on the spectrum to suggestions for those who care about them, these programs provide a chance to explore some of the real issues confronted by the fictional characters in the novel.

“Don Tillman, the main character in the The Rosie Project, likely falls on the autism spectrum,” said Chuck Duritsch, Manager of External Relations at the Dayton Metro Library and co-chair of the Big Read committee. “One of the great things about this book is that it is so entertaining and funny, yet it addresses real life concerns. It gives us a lot to think and talk about.”

In conjunction with the Big Read, the Dayton Metro Library offers several programs about Autism Spectrum Disorder, from strategies for people on the spectrum to suggestions for those who care about them.
