Holding up a book and pretending to read, making up stories to go along with the pictures, narrating a story in a ‘‘reading voice’’, and repeating memorized text are steps along the way to becoming a reader. Parents can acknowledge and appreciate these behaviors as steps towards becoming a fluent reader and their children then come to associate reading with positive feelings and initiative. Books with repetitive text are especially useful for sparking this behavior.
