Book Picture Walk

A picture walk is a practice that teaches children to use pictures as clues to understand the meaning of a story and, once they start reading, to guess at unfamiliar words. Start by examining the cover and slowly turn pages asking: What do you think this book is about? What is happening on this page? Make your way through the whole book just talking about ideas sparked by the illustrations without reading anything.
