Hands-On Experiences and Books

One way that children can “explore the properties of objects and materials” (Ohio Early Learning and Development Standards) is by testing whether various objects sink or float.  Preschoolers are not necessarily ready to learn about buoyancy/density, but they can be encouraged to observe that the same objects will sink or float every time, i.e., that there is consistency in the way the objects behave. Ask questions to help your child to describe the properties of objects and to categorize objects. 

Books can complement these experiences and lead to more opportunities to converse about the concepts and “sink and float.”
