Emotional Intelligence

Children learn to recognize the feelings of others when they learn about their own feelings. You can support this growth when your child expresses an emotion that you can identify.  Label it for her and explain what you are observing: “When you make sounds like those, I think you are feeling frustrated. Am I right?” 

Picture books offer many opportunities to talk about emotions and the visual cues that we use to understand another’s feelings.  As you discuss a character’s feelings,  ask your child to describe situations when she has felt similarly. Ask open ended questions to get your child thinking about how to resolve those feelings.  The following titles offer rich opportunities for this type of conversation:
