Vocabulary development is an important part of learning to decode and understand words when reading. When encountering a new word ask your child to pronounce the word aloud in imitation of you. This helps him or her to form a phonological representation of the word, an important step to adding a word to your vocabulary. It helps your child distinguish the new word from other similar sounding words.
