The ability to recognize the small sounds in words is an important part of reading and spelling development. Preschoolers who know how to recognize and produce rhyming words have an advantage when it comes time for them to identify single phonemes in words ( example: /t/ in tag or /m/ in moon). You’ll find lots of rhyming words in the books below. When sharing them with your preschooler, stop reading and identify the rhyming words. Together you might think of some more words that rhyme with the words in the book. Explain that words “rhyme” when the sounds at the end of each word are the same.
