Learning to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet is a skill preschoolers are learning when you talk about letter shapes and the sounds letters represent. Just reading an alphabet book straight through without stopping to discuss letter shapes, trace letters and emphasize letter names is unlikely to be very effective teaching the alphabet. Start teaching your child the letters in his or her name first and then move on to other letters.
