Family Fun at the Dayton Art Institute

A visit to the art museum with young children may sound daunting, but don't let it stop you. With a little prep ahead of time, an art museum can be a unique learning experience and lay the foundation for an interest in the arts.

Museum educators recommend that you limit your visit with children to a few exhibitions instead of trying to see the whole museum. Visit the DAI website and ask your child to choose an exhibit that they would like to see. Bring along a sketchbook and pencil for sketching in the gallery or dictating/writing about things learned or enjoyed. You might invite your child to find a piece of art they'd like to write a story about. Encourage your child to talk about the art they see by asking questions: "What do you see?" This summer the DAI is offering "Super Saturday Family Days" designed to teach children new art making techniques.
