Discovering New Interests

A great way to support your child to discover new interests is to take a trip to the library and explore the non-fiction section of the children's collection. Let your child select books/topics to explore. Don't worry, you don't need to read every page of every book. For young children, the quality of the pictures is especially important as an avenue for gaining new information. Look for books with clear detailed pictures and spend time talking together about what can be learned from looking. Sometimes the pictures will spark questions that might be answered in the text. You can model this for your child by wondering aloud yourself. Here are a few good ones:
