Scientific Knowledge


Research into the abilities of preschool children has revealed that their concept development can be supported through discussion around hands-on experiences and book reading.  Narrative picture books rarely provide enough information to develop scientific knowledge and can lead to a superficial understanding of vocabulary.  For this reason, reading and discussing informational texts with preschoolers is an important way for them to learn about the world.  It can be challenging to find nonfiction on the preschool level. If the texts you find on topics that interest your child are too difficult, use the pictures as a springboard for discussion and discuss just a few ideas from the text.  Books that can be integrated with hands-on experiences are your best bet.
