Just as conversational language differs from the language used in books, the language in nonfiction differs from the language used in fictional picture books. This is why it’s valuable to find nonfiction titles of interest to your preschooler and read them aloud. Finding non-fiction on the preschool level can be challenging. Many preschool teachers choose “easy reader” nonfiction to share with their students. The problem with this is that “easy readers” do not have the structural complexity, nor richness of language that makes nonfiction unique. The quality of the photography in these readers is often poor. An alternative choice is the “Amazing Animals” series from Creative Education, Inc. These large volumes have amazingly detailed photos that permit observation and learning. The text on each page is limited to a few short sentences that cover basic concepts.
