Supporting your child’s early literacy development during the pre-kindergarten years, does not mean teaching your child to read. Although some children are ready to begin this process, most young children are still gaining important language skills, concepts of print and letter knowledge. Preschool children should be learning to recognize and produce a rhyme, identify the letters in their name and beginning to hear the individual sounds in words. Families can support this development by making sure that sharing books together is a part of every day. Ask questions about the story and discuss the thoughts and feelings your child has. Point out words and letters occasionally and ask your child to tell you the story. These experiences will help your child get ready for kindergarten success.
