Last year the National Early Literacy Panel (NELP), released its report, "Developing Early Literacy: A scientific synthesis of early literacy development and implications for intervention." Renowned researchers evaluated the soundness of all the early literacy research out there and distilled it so that we practitioners can use it. The purpose of the panel and the report is to contribute to the decisions that we make about how to support children's language and literacy development. The report identifies the skills that give children the strongest foundation for learning to read, spell and write.
Now we have a guidance document based on the NELP report which is written for teachers: "What Works: An introductory guide for early language and emergent literacy instruction" . I recommend this very readable document to you. It may help to increase your focus on doing things that make a "significant difference" in young children's early literacy learning.
To wrap up the Get Outside Bookclub, we will be at the Voyage on the Parkway event this Saturday, Oct 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Stop by our booth on the grounds of Wegerzyn Gardens to pick up a bug box and a certificate of completion. There will be lots of free, fun activities for young children and their families including a hayride, pumpkin carving, and live music. There are 10 activity stations at 2 locations (Wegerzyn & the Boonshoft) themed on 10 ways to prepare your child for kindergarten. Children will receive a passport at the registration tent. As they move from activity to activity, they will receive a stamp at each tent.
It's not too late to sign up for the Get Outside Bookclub for preschoolers and their grownups because it goes through October 10. Participants will read at least six nature themed picture books and do six activities outside together. Come to your local branch and when you register, you'll recieve bookmarks with lists of suggested titles which are available at the Dayton Metro Library.
Why not start your participation with a nature scavenger hunt?
“Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb. Brooks to wade, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pine-cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets. And any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of education.”
— Luther Burbank (American horticulturalist and botanist, 1849 – 1926)
