An important concept for young children to learn early in their literacy development is that reading and writing are tools of communication. They need to learn why we read and write, as well as how we read and write. What are you doing? by Elisa Amado will provide one such learning opportunity. Chepito doesn't want to go to school but as he moves around his neighborhood, everyone is reading something. His father is reading a newspaper and when Chepito asks why, he says: "to see who won the game". His grandfather is reading a manual while working on a car. When Chepito asks why, he answers "Because I can't figure out what's wrong with this stupid car." These and many other answers convince Chepito to go to school to learn to read because "it's fun." |
