Picture books with repetitive text are useful for teaching children some of the conventions of print. This beautiful book by Edward Gibbs repeats the phrase "I spy with my little eye..." You can build your child's understanding of print, by pointing to each of these words as you read aloud. Call attention to the facts that we always read sentences from left to right and that there is a space between each word. After modeling this several times, ask your child to do the pointing and the "reading".
