If your family has been listening to the sounds coming from a vernal pool, this book will be of interest. A vernal pool is a seasonal pond. It fills and dries up over the course of the year and has no stream that feeds it. The fact that it dries up makes it an ideal place from frogs. This information and much more can be found in Frog Heaven: Ecology of a vernal pool by Doug Wechsler.
Most juvenile non-fiction isn't written to be read cover-to-cover to preschoolers. Your child may enjoy looking at the pictures and Frog Heaven has some great photography. Select passages to read aloud about photos that your child finds interesting. Hopefully your family will be inspired to don some boots and get outside to study a vernal pool more closely!!
