Although I'm sure your little one has never told you NO!, (ahem), this is a great read-aloud for the child who occasionally digs his or her heels in.
Little Cub, though he loves Old Bear "with all his heart," is having a very contrary morning. When asked to eat all his porridge, wear a scarf outside in the snow, and to take a nap, he repeatedly replies "No, I won't."
"Yes, you will," said Old Bear. "No, I won't," said Little Cub.
But when Old Bear stares hard at him, Little Cub finally complies. Later when Old Bear sneezes, the tables are turned. Now Little Cub gives the loving directives and a non-compliant Old Bear, after a hard stare from Little Cub, gives in every time. All children will identify with the characters in this story and enjoy the role reversal. It offers adults a non-threatening opportunity to talk about how none of us like being told what to do, especially when we don't want to do it.
