Research has shown that when parents speak Spanish better than they speak English, they should speak, read and sing to their child in Spanish. This will help him or her learn the oral communication skills needed to learn to speak and read English. Listening to books read in Spanish helps children to develop their background knowledge and key vocabulary and literacy skills that will enable them to become excellent readers in English. There are many picture book titles that are written in both English and Spanish available at the library. Ask a librarian for help locating them.
