Take care when selecting children’s books that portray Native Americans. It is important to choose books that accurately portray the specifics of a diverse culture and “the characters must be portrayed as unique individuals rather than cultural and/or racial representatives.” (LaBonty, 1995) To do your “cultural homework” check out this blog by Debbie Reese: American Indians in Children’s Literature. 

Thanks to the Animals is one of titles recommended by Reese that might be interesting to your preschooler.  Written by a Passamaquoddy storyteller and musician, a baby falls unnoticed (at first) from a sled and the woodland animals come close to shelter him until his father returns for him.
