Children love it when adults are silly and having a good time. If you bring fun into your reading aloud time, children will be more attentive and responsive. Read books that you enjoy or think are funny. Be as expressive as possible: use different voices for the characters, make eye contact with your listeners, vary the loudness of your voice and pause for effect. Bark, George by Jules Feiffer is a humorous book for adults and children alike. George is a puppy who can't seem to bark. When he opens his mouth to bark, out come the sounds of a cat, pig, cow or horse. Distraught, George's mother takes him to the vet who proceeds to pull various animals out of George's mouth. Children get a kick out of thwarted expectations and parents will enjoy the humorous pictures.
