When reading a book with rhyming text aloud, stop occasionally and focus your child's attention on the rhyming words. The ability to recognize when words rhyme and to produce words that rhyme is part of phonological awareness. Once a child has learned to recognize rhymes, begin to focus attention on the beginning sounds in words (onsets). Phonological awareness is essential when phonics instruction begins.
