The ability to discern syllables is one of the skills children learn early in the development of phonological awareness. Try playing this game with your child: as you are driving or waiting in line at a store, "I am thinking of a 'tur' - - 'key' (giving a significant pause between syllables). What is it?" Blending the syllables together is relatively easy for a four year old to do. Then ask your child to break words into syllables for you to guess. This is more difficult, but they will get it eventually.
