The ability to recognize and produce a rhyme is an important skill to have when phonics instruction begins. The ability to hear the sounds in words, apart from their meanings, is the foundation of a child's later understanding that letters represent the sounds in words. When children learn what "rhyme" means, they are focusing on the matching of the sounds in words.
When you read A Girl and her Gator by Sean Bryan, you'll have many opportunities to point out rhyming words to your child. |
