Red Sled by Lita Judge is a simple story of sled that is left outside and discovered by a bear and other creatures who use it to have a fast and glorious ride down a slope. The only words are environment sounds "scrunch, scrunch, scrunch scrinch..." and sounds of glee; "Roooooooooooooooeoee" from the animals. The font of the text varies in size to convey the loudness or softness of the noise. When reading it aloud point out this technique to your child, follow the words with your finger and explain that as the letters get bigger, you make the sounds louder and louder. This is a great book to emphasize that the letters in the words represent the sounds in words. |
