Knitty Kitty by David Elliott is a cozy read-aloud for young children experiencing the snow and building snowmen. Their experiences in the snow will likely spark an interest in the subjectof snowmen and improve their comprehension of the story. In Knitty Kitty, mama cat knits her kittens a hat, mittens and scarf. But we soon learn that the kittens have their own ideas of what to do with the outdoor wear and it involves a snowman.
This title works well for building your preschool child's knowledge about letters. The text on each page is brief and there's lots of repetition. As you read aloud, follow the text with your finger or hold your child's hand and assist him or her to point to "Knitty Kitty" each time it appears in the text. Call attention to the letter "K" in each of these two words. Learning about the names of letters in the context of actual books helps to build your child's knowledge of the functions of print. Do you know anyone whose name begins with the letter "K"? Write it and compare the letters in Knitty Kitty to the letters in this name. Can you find another repeated word that starts with the letter "k", this time a lowercase letter?
