Kids love knowing things and learn new facts quickly when they are interested in a topic. For example, if worms cover the sidewalk after a rainstorm, take advantage of your child's interest in these worms and find some books about worms. Non-fiction is a mainstay at libraries! When reading non-fiction to preschoolers, don't think you need to read every word from cover to cover. Lots of non-fiction is written for older children but when preschoolers are interested in a topic they will benefit from hearing at least a selection of the information in non-fiction titles. Explain any new vocabulary and use that vocabulary when talking about their experiences. |
