This beautiful picture book is shelved in nonfiction and provides simple factual information. The text is limited to two or three sentences per page and the pictures are large, complicated and stunning, making it ideal for a preschool audience. Although the topic is bugs in the winter, the pictures depict children engaged in a variety of winter activities, as well as the insects in their winter locations. It's rich vocabulary provides ample opportunity to pause occasionally and talk about uncommon words: 'huddled', 'nymph', 'colony', 'gall', 'chrysalis', 'migrating' and 'antifreeze'.
What if you were a honeybee? You'd eat the sweet honey in your hive and huddle with all the other bees. You'd stay warm together, each taking turns in the warmest spot - the center.
After reading this book, you'll be inspired to take a winter hike tosee if you can find any signs of insects surviving the winter cold. |
