There is a strong relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. The more words you know, the better you understand the text. Although most preschoolers are not reading yet, young children are especially capable of learning language during their first five years of life. This is one reason why it is so important that your child have lots of experiences listening to you read aloud; books present vocabulary that we rarely use in everyday conversation.
Warduff and the Corncob Caper by Mat Head is a humorous new picture book with lots of vocabulary words that young children might not know. When reading a word that you think your child might not be familiar with, stop and talk about its meaning. Give some other examples of the word used correctly to describe an experience that your child has, and when possible, give an example of when the word doesn't apply. |
