One technique for getting children talking is to ask open-ended questions as you read a book aloud. An open-ended question does not have a right or wrong answer and requires a response greater than a single word or two. Ask your preschooler to give their opinion, make predictions or offer their preferences. Research shows that it is through having many opportunities to talk as well as to listen to adults and peers that children gain language skills so valuable for their success in reading and writing. |
