Please join us as Author and Business & Economics Reporter at the Dayton Daily News, Steve Bennish, discusses his newly published documentary in photographs, “Scrappers: Dayton, Ohio, and America Turn to Scrap.” This book is a photo essay about the urban armies of the poor and jobless here in Dayton and around the nation who are scavenging for scrap metal in an economic landscape of vacated homes and abandoned factories. Scrap metal is among this nation’s top exports to China in a decade that has seen the closure of 60,000 factories, the loss of five million manufacturing jobs and annual trade deficits of $600 billion. A national debate is now underway about remedies.
