John Arne Sæterøy or as he’s better known (by some) “Jason” is a Norwegian artist/author of some of the most individual graphic novels available. He usually substitutes Little-Orphan-Annie-eyed animal faces for human faces, but his stories are quite human. Some of them can be Science-Fiction odd like I Killed Hitler and The Living and the Dead. But just as often his tales hew toward the realistic. Hey, Wait! is an affecting story of childhood loss turning into adult regret; it will stop you in your tracks. The book that hooked me and haunts me is Why Are You Doing This?. I’ve read it several times (and you will too if you give it a chance—not like it takes that long to read). It’s the story of Alex who’s depressed because of a failed relationship. His friend takes a vacation and asks Alex to water his plants. While doing so, Alex sees something in an apartment across the street. He thinks nothing of it, but it results in his being wanted for murder. His investigation, in trying to clear himself, and the…well, honestly, shattering conclusion will stick with you. If Berkeley Breathed and Alfred Hitchcock collaborated on a comic, this would be it. Try it, you won’t be sorry.
