 By now, Japanese animator, director, and writer Hayao Miyazaki is familiar to a large portion of American movie audiences. For those not familiar, he's called the Japanese Disney...that's really not fair; he's much better than Disney. He creates children's movies with a real child's perspective but with enough depth that older children and adults can enjoy them too--repeatedly. This is his fourth film and was originally released in 1988 in Japan. We own a couple different versions: the Fox Studios version (doesn't have the original Japanese voice track) from 2002 and the Disney release (which features an all new translation/dub with the Fanning sisters playing the leads as well as the original Japanese with subtitles). I hear there isn't much difference, but I haven't seen the Disney version. It's the story of two sisters who move to the country with their father while their mother is in the hospital. They discover an earth spirit living in the camphor tree behind their new house. It's beautiful, sweet, touching, and realistic (well, except for the fantasy elements). A perfect family movie with a Green and uplifting message. DML also has the full story in comic book versions. Check them all out!
