Did you kno w a woman from Dayton was awarded the United Nations Human Rights Prize? Dorothy Stang grew up with her 8 brothers and sisters here in Dayton and attended Julienne High School. At 17, she joined the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in Cincinnati and began a life of service to the poor. At 73, Sister Stang gained international attention when she was gunned down in a Brazilian rainforest for protecting the land rights of the peasant farmers with whom she had lived and worked for 30 years. They Killed Sister Dorothy is an award-winning documentary narrated by Martin Sheen that examines her work in the Amazon and the reasons for her murder in 2005. A complex and riveting story is told through footage of interviews with Sister Dorothy and her supporters as well as actual courtroom scenes from the trial of her accused murderers.
