This Lifetime movie is based on the teen novel of the same name by Laurie Halse Anderson. Kristen Stewart (of Twilight fame) plays Melinda, a spirited high school freshman who slowly finds it harder to talk during school until she totally shuts down into self-imposed muteness. Her family and friends wonder what is going on with Melinda. Could her strange behavior is due to her being the reason the cops busted the big end-of-year senior party at school making her the school outcast of epic proportions? Or, could it be her parents are totally clueless to the world in which they and her live? Or, is there a much deeper, terrifying and personal reason? With the help of her understanding art teacher, Melinda begins to deal with the reason behind her muteness. It takes time for the truth to come out and when it does, it does not set her free. Only the end of the school year can give her the release she desires. A powerful film which addresses the issue of violence and violation too many young girls face in this world. Hopefully, this film will help other teens find their voices as well. Rated PG-13.
