Sherlock Holmes has been spun everywhich way: action in “Sherlock Holmes (2010)”, comedy “Without a Clue” and “Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother”, and animated mouse “Great Mouse Detective”. However, no one has brought him into the 21st century until now (OK, so he was dragged into the 22nd century in a Disney cartoon series). The guys behind the phenomenally popular new incarnation of Dr. Who decided to update the Consulting Detective and this three episode British TV series is the happy result. The 90 minute episodes were aired here on Mystery. The creators tried to stick with the original material as much as possible: the 21st century Dr. Watson is back from Afghanistan just like the original and he keeps a 21st century journal…a blog. Everything here is top notch: acting, writing, direction. Holmes’ personality and detachment are brilliantly portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. The only sad part is there are only three episodes…but, now that Martin Freeman (who plays Watson) is done, or at least on break from, playing Bilbo Baggins for Peter Jenkins’ “Hobbit” movies (for which Cumberbatchis doing the voice of Smaug, HA!), BBC is filming three more 90 minute Sherlocks. Smashing!
