Do you happen to know if there was ever a belief in an imperfect God? This is one of the final questions Kris Kelvin, the protagonist of Stanislaw Lem's novel, must ponder about the gargantuan and enigmatic planet by the name of Solaris. Kelvin is a psychologist who is sent to Solaris to investigate the odd behavior of a crew of scientists who live on a space station in orbit around the planet. Solaris is a classic science fiction novel by the Polish author Stanislaw Lem. At least two movies and a television series have been made based on the novel. Lem did not like the famous Russian version and did not see Steven Soderbegh's production. Both films are very different from the novel. There have also been large numbers of imitations as well. Solaris was discovered more than a hundred years before Kelvin's arrival. It is a large planet engulfed by something like a great ocean that erupts in what seem to be waves that assume strange shapes. A completely new branch of cosmology developments for the study of the planet called œsolaristics. After years of study from the space station, one theory suggests that Solaris is actually a living being and can be communicated with. The scientists attempt to contact the planet. Solaris's response has horrific consequences. Each of the space station's residents receives a visitor.Kelvin also receives a visitor, a resurrection of a long dead wife. Read the novel to find out more.
